About MACEO

The Michigan Association of Code Enforcement Officers (MACEO) is a non-profit organization open to persons involved with and responsible for the enforcement of land use, nuisances, zoning, environmental, building and property maintenance codes for the State, County, or local Municipality entity.

The purpose of the Michigan Association of Code Enforcement Officers is to promote professional and social fellowship and the spirit of cooperation among the members of this organization; To provide educational services and activities to aid in the performance of their employment; To educate the membership on laws and ordinances on the federal, state, and local levels of other branches and departments of government; To gather, receive and disseminate information concerning employment standards and the certification of members on a state level; To give full cooperation to the officers of this association for the betterment of the association.

MACEO offers monthly meetings at locations suitable for training sessions and group discussion of issues that are of mutual concern to code enforcement officers. Methods of maintaining the professionalism and expertise of this profession are explored, usually in an informal setting over a sit-down meal.

MACEO facilitates communication and networking between code enforcement officials across the State of Michigan and the United States. In addition to the monthly meetings and training, an annual conference is also a popular event held during the Spring in Mt. Pleasant. Many of MACEO's members are also active in the American Association of Code Enforcement Officials (AACE), a national organization of code officials. In 2005 MACEO was accepted as a Local Chapter of the International Code Council (ICC).

Most of all, MACEO is committed to enhancing the effectiveness of its members, thereby providing safer, cleaner, and more compatible environments in our communities. Our training typically includes such topics as legal aspects of code enforcement, nuisance abatement, how to deal with difficult people, inspector safety, code interpretation; property maintenance and zoning.

MACEO offers a link to codes drawn from communities across Michigan to aid our membership in keeping their local codes updated.

The Michigan Association of Code Enforcement Officers offers a voluntary certification program to all of its members. A total of 30 credit hours are needed in a three year cycle in order to obtain certification.

Certification hours are obtained by attending MACEO sponsored training programs throughout the year. One hour programs are available at the monthly meetings held in February, May, June, September and November of each year.

Our new three year cycle begins with January 2018 and runs through December 2020. Certificate Awards are presented at our December 2020 meeting.
